Abbeyfield House is well situated, near the centre of Brecon, with superb views towards the stunning Brecon Beacons. Built in the 1970's as a centre for young people with learning disabilities, the house was then purchased in 1997 by Abbeyfield Brecon Society.
Abbeyfield House is a very friendly community, in a safe and attractive setting. We have twelve residential flats created to provide comfortable retirement accommodation. Each of our flats have a separate living room/kitchenette, bedroom and en-suite shower room, and some flats are large enough for double occupancy, all flats on the first floor are served by a lift. Our flats come carpeted and unfurnished so that you can personalise it with your favourite pieces of furniture, photographs and trinkets to make it feel like home. Unfortunately, our flats are not suitable at this time for wheelchair users.
Attached to the main building, is a three bedroomed 'cottage' which has been recently renovated to a high standard and boasts a downstairs wet room along with a fully fitted kitchen, a pleasant sitting/dining room and an upstairs bathroom with walk in shower. The current occupants of the cottage choose to eat daily with our twelve other residents in the main dining room.
Residents make their own breakfasts in their flats whilst lunches and lighter evening meals are provided in the communal dining room. We have a laundry room and a bathroom on each of the two floors, together with a room for hairdressing and a library/quiet room. There is Wi-Fi access throughout Abbeyfield House so you will be able to use all your devices, develop your skills on the internet and keep in touch with loved ones.
Our professional and caring House Manager and her staff ensure that our premises are kept warm, comfortable and safe, and that meals provided are both enjoyable and nutritious, with some of the herbs and vegetables sourced from our gardens and all other produce bought locally.
The staff are on hand during day to offer support, and both Trustees and volunteers form part of this network of support for residents.
During a 'normal' year we offer various different events including Burns Night, an indoor Christmas Market, Strawberry Teas and Macmillan Coffee mornings to mention but a few, giving an ideal opportunity to involve the friends and volunteers of Abbeyfield Brecon.
Located in a quiet part of Brecon, which is a pleasant and friendly town with a range of shops, a thriving theatre and cinema and a beautiful Cathedral. You'll also find a selection of banks, a Post Office, leisure centre, library/cultural hub, doctors’ surgery, several dental practices and chemists, a cottage hospital, ambulance & Fire Services nearby. Plus various denominational Churches.
Brecon boasts many thriving local clubs, societies and walking groups. Supermarkets are in abundance, as are coffee houses and pubs, some serving excellent food. Most of these are within walking distance of Abbeyfield House, or you may wish to avail yourself of the town’s Dial-a-Ride service at a modest cost, with plentiful taxis also available. Brecon Market days are Tuesdays and Fridays, with craft fairs and farmers markets held once a month.
There are a number of annual cultural events to enjoy in the local area such as the Brecon Jazz Festival, Brecon Baroque Music Festival and in nearby Hay on Wye, the famous literary festival with celebrity guests from all over the world.
Brecon has a particularly warm and historic relationship with the Gurkha Regiment who often parade through the town with great dignity in their magnificent uniforms, and a visit to the Regimental Museum will bring you face to face with artefacts from the famous “Rorke’s Drift” Zulu battles, and first and second World Wars. Other items of historic interest may be seen in the Memorial Chapel at our impressive Brecon Cathedral.
There is a regular bus service to nearby towns such as Abergavenny and Crickhowell and to Cardiff the capital City of Wales, with the bus station just a 10 minute walk from the house. Brecon is a major tourist centre for walkers, hikers and nature lovers.

Our wonderful caring House Manager, who always goes the extra mile to ensure the safety and happiness of our residents.
Another happy, bubbly personality. Bridget has a background in catering and hospitality and has bought her skills over to us here at Abbeyfield.
Joan is our bubbly House Assistant and her role covers helping in the kitchen to cleaning some of the residents flats. Joan can always be heard laughing, wherever she is in the house!
Tom is one of our newest members of staff, not to say the youngest! He trained at Newtown for two years studying Professional Catering and has joined us from a very busy and popular restaurant.
A very welcome addition to the team, Dyan works part time in the kitchen helping Bridget and Tom. She has a keen eye for detail and is very popular with the residents due to her enthusiastic nature. A big change from working with teenagers!
Julie is one of our tea time cooks, who splits her time between Abbeyfield, cooking at a local primary school and writing the scripts for Brecon's Pantomimes - a very busy lady!
It's the little things that make a difference.

The balance between socialising in one’s flat and having well prepared community lunch and tea is good. I enjoyed sitting out last summer in the lovely grounds and the entertainment that was put on.
Resident at Abbeyfield House
I couldn’t have found a better place for pleasant company and support. The staff are particularly helpful and caring and the sound of laughter is never far away. The meals together also provide a chance for light interchange and the growth of friendship. It is a blessed place.
Resident at Abbeyfield House
I am very happy to be here in a comfortable house with lovely gardens within the National Park, and we have such friendly, helpful and caring staff.
Resident at Abbeyfield House
I was unable to maintain the house I lived in, no longer able to drive. Shopping was starting to prove a little difficult and also preparing meals. I chose to come to Abbeyfield because it is in the centre of Brecon & I am able to walk into town daily, to get my newspaper. Abbeyfield Brecon is a delightful place with a beautiful outlook. I have a lovely flat & am wonderfully fed!. The gardens around the house are very well cared for and a delight to sit in. It is good to have a laundry & a hairdresser and to know that all my needs are cared for.
